Our History


In 2015 and 2019, respectively, long term employees Ian Ryan and John Marrell became partners in Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management with increased involvement in managing the operations and affairs of the company.
The company encourages all of its staff to become members of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists Inc. (AACAI) and the Australian Archaeological Association (AAA). We uphold the ethical standards set by these organisations, and we are committed to delivering tailored, comprehensive and efficient outcomes for heritage projects, ensuring a quality-driven and reliable consultancy service.

Ian started working as an archaeological consultant in 2003, prior to completing his PhD on Tasmanian stone artefacts in 2007. Ian joined Gavin Jackson Pty Ltd as a Senior Archaeologist in 2008, becoming a Project Manager in 2010. Ian became a partner of Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management in 2015 and later oversaw its transition to Echoes Cultural Heritage Management, following the retirement of Gavin Jackson in 2023. Ian is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Echoes CHM and is a co-director with John Marrell. He also continues in the role as Project Manager.
Ian has led numerous archaeological surveys, including several excavations and salvages in the Pilbara region, and has authored and co-authored more than 500 archaeological survey, excavation and salvage reports. He has presented and published several research papers based on data collected during archaeological surveys and other cultural resource management projects. Ian pioneered the GJCRM/Echoes CHM internal seminar series, an ongoing training initiative designed to maintain high professional standards and keep staff informed about the status of the heritage industry.
Ian is the current President of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACAI).

John joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management as a Field Archaeologist in 2009, rising to the position of Project Manager in 2014. John became a partner of Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management in 2019 and later oversaw its transition to Echoes Cultural Heritage Management, following the retirement of Gavin Jackson in 2023. John is currently co-director of Echoes CHM and continues in his role as Project Manager.
John has extensive experience in archaeological surveys and excavations and has managed numerous cultural heritage surveys across a variety of locations in Western Australia, including the Pilbara and Goldfields regions of WA. Additionally, John has extensive knowledge of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) and has particular expertise providing heritage services for Native Title Parties and the mining exploration sector, in line with Exploration and Heritage Protection Agreements and relevant legislation.
John is a member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACAI).

Michelle began working as a professional archaeologist in Ireland in 2008, moving to Australia in 2009, and joining Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management as a Field Archaeologist in 2010. She soon rose to the position of Field Manager and has been a Project Manager at the company since 2020. Michelle has contributed to numerous cultural heritage surveys across Western Australia and has co-authored over 150 archaeological survey reports. Michelle contributes to the running of field staff meetings and managing the field survey schedule. She is also responsible for numerous Echoes CHM innovations, including the production of an internal quarterly newsletter.
Michelle is a full member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACAI).

JJ has been working as a professional archaeologist since 2007. He joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management as a Field Archaeologist after arriving in Australia in 2011. Since then, JJ has gained significant experience by field managing numerous cultural heritage projects across Western Australia and co-authoring several archaeological survey and salvage reports. He has also worked at Main Roads WA and Rio Tinto as a Senior Heritage Advisor. JJ re-joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Project Manager in 2023, where he helps run field staff meetings, co-manages the field survey schedule, and assists with the administration of the Echoes CHM’s ongoing internal seminar series as well as other training initiatives.
JJ is the current Secretary of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACAI).

Trish has been working as a consultant archaeologist since 2006, joining Gavin Jackson Pty Ltd as a Field Archaeologist in 2008. Trish was the inaugural Quality Control (QC) Manager at the company from 2010 to 2014. After spending time away for parenting duties, Trish returned to the company as a report writer in 2019 and has been the Project Manager: Special Projects at Echoes CHM since 2025. Trish has extensive experience conducting archaeological heritage surveys and has authored and co-authored over 500 archaeological reports. Trish has also conducted desktop or research-based projects requiring specialised heritage documents, such as Cultural Heritage Management Plans, Social and Cultural Heritage Management Plans, Heritage Guidelines and Social Surroundings.


Tegan joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management as Assistant Report Writer in 2017 and undertook the role of Quality Control (QC) Manager and Senior Report Writer in 2019. Tegan has authored and co-authored more than 200 heritage survey, salvage and excavation reports. Tegan’s dedication to high standards and her adept leadership of the QC Team, as well her big-picture approach to projects, ensures Echoes CHM produces high-quality preliminary advice documents and archaeological reports for clients.

Jason joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Report Writer in the Quality Control (QC) team in 2024. Jason is adept at spatial analysis, academic research and editing, and professional presentations. Since joining the company, Jason has become integral in the QC team for writing, reviewing and editing heritage survey reports.
Jason is a full member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACAI).

Vicky joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Report Writer in the Quality Control (QC) Team in 2024. Vicky has over 30 years’ experience as an academic and professional archaeologist both in the United Kingdom and Australia. Vicky completed her DPhil in Palaeolithic Archaeology at the University of Oxford in 2002. Since arriving in Australia in 2008, Vicky has worked as a project manager and lithic artefact specialist at the University of Western Australia. Vicky brings extensive experience and expertise to the QC team.
Vicky is a full member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACAI).

Alex joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management in 2020 and is currently a GIS Specialist at Echoes Cultural Heritage Management. Alex has extensive experience in GIS database management and mapping through various research and Government-based projects across Western Australia. Alex has a solid technical background in GIS. Her role at Echoes CHM involves the analysis and control of all spatial data relating to heritage surveys undertaken by the company, as well as the creation of maps and databases as required for heritage projects. Alex maintains all GPS devices that are used at the company, and she contributes to technology-based training initiatives for Echoes CHM staff.

Ben began working with Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management as an archaeologist and heritage consultant in 2011 after arriving in Australia from Canada. Ben is currently a Field Manager for Echoes Cultural Heritage Management, and he brings a wealth of experience to the role, having worked extensively on a range of academic and community-based survey and excavation projects, as both an archaeologist and anthropologist in Western Australia and northern and eastern Canada.
Ben is a member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACAI).

B’geella began working as a professional archaeologist after completing her Honours in Archaeology at the University of Western Australia in 2015. She has worked in both urban and regional locales and has been involved in the ARC linkage project 'Lifeways of the First Australians' and ‘Kimberly Visions’. B’geella joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management in 2019 and has been involved in numerous archaeological heritage surveys across the Pilbara, Kimberley, Goldfields and Western Desert regions of Western Australia. B’geella is currently a Field Manager at Echoes Cultural Heritage Management.

Niamh joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management as an Administrative Assistant in 2021 until completing her honours and becoming a Field Archaeologist later that year. Niamh is currently a Field Manager for Echoes CHM, and she also serves as the company’s social media and website co-ordinator. Niamh now has substantial experience in surveys and excavations across the Pilbara, Kimberley, Western Desert, Goldfields and South West regions of Western Australia, as well as writing the associated deliverables for many of these projects.
Niamh is a member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (AACAI).

Callan joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management in 2022, having been involved in a range of both Australian and international archaeological projects prior to that. Callan is currently a Field Manager at Echoes Cultural Heritage Management, where she conducts and leads archaeological heritage surveys, identifies and records archaeological sites and material, works closely with clients in the field, and liaises with Traditional Owners. Callan is also the current Health and Safety Representative for the company.

Shiqin joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management in 2024, after completing her Honours at the University of Western Australia. Shiqin has volunteered at the Boola Bardip Western Australian Museum and has also worked as a research assistant for the Centre of Rock Art Research and Management at the University of Western Australia. Shiqin has recently become a Field Manager at Echoes Cultural Heritage Management, after gaining invaluable experience on numerous archaeological heritage surveys in the Pilbara, where she has become adept at identifying and recording archaeological sites and material, and working closely and effectively with Traditional Owners and proponent representatives in the field.

Paul completed his Honours in Archaeology at the University of Western Australia in 2015. He joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management in 2020, having had significant prior experience working in remote Aboriginal communities and specialising in the identification and analysis of Aboriginal stone artefacts. He has since been involved in many archaeological heritage surveys across the Pilbara, Kimberley and Western Desert regions of Western Australia. Paul is currently a Field Manager at Echoes Cultural Heritage Management.

Brandon joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Archaeologist in early 2024, after graduating with a Masters in Archaeology and Heritage Management from Flinders University in South Australia. Brandon’s research was focused on zooarchaeology and stone artefact analysis. Brandon has become an integral part of the field team at the company and has worked on numerous archaeological surveys and salvages in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.


Joel began working as a professional archaeologist in Wales after graduating with a Masters in Archaeological Science from Cardiff University in 2019. His studies focused on zooarchaeology and animal bone assessments. Joel joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Archaeologist after moving to Australia in 2025, and he has since been involved in numerous archaeological surveys and salvages across the Pilbara and Western Desert regions of Western Australia.

Chris joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Archaeologist in 2025, after graduating with a Masters in Archaeology from the University of New England in New South Wales. Chris’s major research project was on lithic technology in Mithaka Country in southwest Queensland. Since joining the company, Chris has been involved in archaeological surveys, excavations and salvages across the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Kathleen began working as a professional archaeologist in Ireland after graduating with an Honours in Applied Archaeology in 2013. After moving to Australia in 2018, she has worked extensively in consulting archaeology in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia. Kathleen joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Archaeologist in 2025, and she has since been involved in numerous archaeological surveys across the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Micheal recently joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Archaeologist in late 2025, after graduating with a Masters in Maritime Archaeology from Flinders University in South Australia. Michael has practical experience in scientific diving and geophysical remote sensing, as well as archival research and photogrammetry.

Lynda has over 40 years’ experience in cultural heritage management in Western Australia. Since graduating from the University of Western Australia in 1982, she has worked as a Principal Consultant for the university’s Centre of Prehistory and as a Tutor and Laboratory Demonstrator at the university’s Department of Archaeology and Anthropology. Between 1995 and 2007, Lynda has worked in various Government roles, including as an assistant at the WA Aboriginal Affairs Department and as a Case Manager at the National Native Title Tribunal, and between 2007 and 2021, she worked as a Heritage Specialist (and later as a Heritage Superintendent) at Rio Tinto. Lynda joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management in April 2021 as a Project Archaeologist, researching current archaeological methodology, developing project proposals, and assessing draft report and planning documents. Since then, she has also been seconded to Rottnest Island Authority, Santos and Rio Tinto to provide advice and support to ensure these companies and agencies meet their heritage obligations. Currently, Lynda is seconded to the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure as a Heritage Approvals Specialist on the State Government’s Westport program.

Sam joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Anthropologist in late 2024. Sam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Western Australia in 2020 and has several years’ experience as a commercial field archaeologist during his time based in the United Kingdom between 2020 and 2024. Since joining the company, Sam has assisted on a number of ethnographic and heritage surveys in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Sam is a member for the Anthropological Society of Western Australia (ASWA).

Evonne joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Anthropologist in 2025. Evonne completed a Honours in Anthropology and Archaeology at Durham University in the United Kingdom in 2019 followed by a Masters in Energy and Society at Durham University in 2021. Since joining the company, Evonne has assisted on a number of ethnographic and heritage surveys in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Lynda joined Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management in April 2021 as a Project Archaeologist, researching current archaeological methodology, developing project proposals, and assessing draft report and planning documents. Since then, she has also been seconded to Rottnest Island Authority, Santos and Rio Tinto to provide advice and support to ensure these companies and agencies meet their heritage obligations. Currently, Lynda is seconded to the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure as a Heritage Approvals Specialist on the State Government’s Westport program.

Sam joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Anthropologist in late 2024. Sam graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Western Australia in 2020 and has several years’ experience as a commercial field archaeologist during his time based in the United Kingdom between 2020 and 2024. Since joining the company, Sam has assisted on a number of ethnographic and heritage surveys in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Sam is a member for the Anthropological Society of Western Australia (ASWA).

Evonne joined Echoes Cultural Heritage Management as a Field Anthropologist in 2025. Evonne completed a Honours in Anthropology and Archaeology at Durham University in the United Kingdom in 2019 followed by a Masters in Energy and Society at Durham University in 2021. Since joining the company, Evonne has assisted on a number of ethnographic and heritage surveys in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
