Hope Downs

 

Gavin Jackson Cultural Resource Management has completed a range of work over the last 8 years for Rio Tinto Iron Ore in the Hope Downs project areas.  This included archaeological surveys, basic and detailed site assessment and recording, systematic salvages and excavation of rockshelters. Surveyed areas included a rail line with associated infrastructure, pipelines, access roads and water bores. The recording was conducted with the involvement and assistance of representatives from RTIO and representatives from the relevant Traditional Owner groups, including Banjima, Nyiyaparli, Gobawarrah Minduarra Yinhawanga and Ngarlawangga.

Ian Ryan Director & Project Manager
Dr Ian Ryan has worked full time as an archaeological consultant since 2003 and joined the GJCRM team as a Project Manager and senior archaeologist in 2008. Ian has been the Senior Consultant on more than 250 indigenous archaeological surveys including several excavations and large-scale site salvages in the Pilbara region. Ian has authored and co-authored more than 300 archaeological survey and salvage reports. He has presented and published several research papers based on data collected during archaeological surveys and other cultural resource management projects.

As a Project Manager for Echoes CHM, Ian’s role is to manage, administer and supervise projects for ECHM and to maximise the productivity of field managers and field archaeologists. Ian completes these projects to a high standard and within budget. Ian is also responsible for project life cycle including scope of works and budgets, managing teams in the field and overseeing the resultant survey reports. He also administers ECHM’s ongoing internal seminar series, a training initiative designed to maintain high professional standards and keep staff informed about the status of the heritage industry.
Ian is a strong leader and is a member of the ECHM Management Team.
Michelle Smyth Project Manager
Michelle began working as a professional archaeologist in Ireland in 2007 working initially as a General Operator and then as a Site Assistant on a number of commercial archaeology excavations and Technician Assistant throughout 2008.

Michelle joined the GJCRM team since 2010 working as a Field Manager and her current role is Project Manager for Echoes CHM, working with the Project Management team.

Michelle is involved in the planning, executing, and evaluating archaeological heritage surveys for specific projects. She also manages project teams, supervising field staff as required and ensuring quality control throughout the duration of each project. Michelle ensures that surveys run efficiently in the field by effectively managing field teams to achieve best possible outcomes for clients.

Michelle has contributed to numerous Aboriginal cultural heritage surveys in the Pilbara and her responsibilities have involved liaising with traditional indigenous land owners and proponent clients. She has also contributed to site avoidance heritage reports in the form of site descriptions and digital site plans. Michelle is a member of ECHM Management Team.
Ben Pentz Field Manager
Ben began working with GJCRM in 2011 as an archaeologist and heritage consultant and is currently a Field Manager for Echoes CHM. He has contributed to a number of Aboriginal cultural heritage surveys in the Pilbara and the Goldfields, and his roles have involved liaising with traditional indigenous land owners and clients as well as identifying and recording archaeological material. He has also authored, co-authored, and edited multiple site avoidance, section 16, section 18 and salvage level heritage reports.

Ben has also had substantial archaeological experience throughout Canada.
